Entry Requirements—Tourist visas are easily obtained at the airport upon arrival in Tana. See instructions at the Embassy of Madagascar website, and download the visa application form and have it completed in advance of arrival. You need to provide one passport photo, and proof of your departure flight. If you wish, you can obtain your visa in advance through the Embassy.
Immunizations and Health—Check with your doctor or a travel clinic before taking this tour to obtain vaccination recommendations pertinent to your own medical and travel history. Click on the CDC Travel Health website to review currently recommended vaccinations.
Exit Requirements—At this writing, departure taxes are included in your airline ticket. Any departure fees are the responsibility of the individual tour participant if there is any change in this status.
Remember: Plan ahead! This is not a tour that you can book at the last minute, hop on a plane and go. (You should have at least one month prior to departure to plan and obtain your immunizations!)
On this tour, international airfare is NOT included. You will need to get your flights to/from Antananarivo, Madagascar (airport code TNR). We encourage you to work with Steven Goldberg at Frosch Travel in Chicago, who knows the best flights to get you to and from Madagascar.
All flights within Madagascar are included in the price of this trip.
You need to arrive in Antananarivo by the evening of Friday, June 15, 2018. Late night departure is from Antananarivo on Friday, June 29, 2018 (main tour), or July 3, 2018 (if participating in the extension).

NOTE: The recent trend in travel is for travelers to finalize their plans much closer to departure time than was customary in the past. While we try to be as flexible as possible we often must turn away last minute registrants because we relinquish hotel space and air reservations 8 – 12 weeks prior to departure! Please keep this in mind when making your travel plans.
Located south of the Equator, Madagascar is in the beginning of its winter season in June. Temperatures range from a low of 50 degrees at nighttime to a high of 75 degrees during the daytime. A detailed packing list will be forwarded to you with your documents for this tour. That list will focus on the gear needed for the Safari, as well as more information about weight limitations for our internal flights.
The official currency of Madagascar is the Malagasy Ariary (MGA). Visitors can exchange US dollars, pounds sterling and euro on arrival at the airport, although limits on the amount are in place. Banks are found in the cities and main tourist areas, although many will only take US dollars or the euro. Travelers’ checks are impossible to cash—don’t use them. ATMs are the easiest way to get cash and are found in city centers, but cash is king in the countryside. Credit cards are accepted at major hotels and stores in cities, but are not yet widely used as a form of payment and a service charge will most likely be applied for credit card payments. As of July 1 the Ariari was worth about 2,975 per US dollar. Click here to see the most up-to-date exchange rates.
Tipping in Madagascar: We will give collective tips from our group in restaurants, and to our local guides and drivers. We will publish a budget and suggested tip contribution before departure. Above that, you will only need to tip for individual services that are not included in our tour price (such as spa treatments, taxis, meals on your own, bar waiters, etc.). Here is a helpful guide to tipping in Madagascar.
