Experience the best of Bogotá with a fascinating city tour that includes a visit to the colorful La Candelaria neighborhood, Monserrate Hill, and one of the city's most famous museums. Start your day by exploring La Candelaria, the city's oldest neighborhood, where colonial buildings and colorful graffiti art blend seamlessly. Visit the iconic Plaza de Bolivar, the main square of Bogotá, surrounded by an imposing cathedral and several government buildings.
Next, head to the world-renowned Gold Museum, home to the largest collection of pre-Hispanic gold artifacts in the world, with over 34,000 pieces. After lunch we experience the excitement of playing “Tejo.” This traditional indigenous sport has been played in Colombia for over 500 years. The game involves throwing a metal piece called a "tejo" onto a board with clay and gunpowder, aiming to hit a small target in the center. You definitely know when you hit it! Playing Tejo is not only a fun way to spend time with friends, but also an opportunity to immerse yourself in Colombian culture. Enjoy a local handcrafted beer while you play and see if you have what it takes to hit the target. We return to the hotel for a free evening.

Welcome to Medellín! Nestled in the verdant hills of the Antioquia region is Medellín, a city that has earned the appellation: “The City of Eternal Spring" for its pleasant year-round temperatures of around 73 degrees Fahrenheit. Medellín is a shining example of Colombia's resurgence, having won the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize in 2016 for its impressive transformation over the past few decades. The city now boasts a network of cable cars and escalators that link the upper neighborhoods with the city center, turning what were once considered "no-go" areas into vibrant hotspots for tourism, gastronomy, and the arts. Everywhere you look, there is art to be found, including Botero's famous “Torso de Mujer” sculpture gracing the main plaza. For those seeking to venture beyond the city limits and explore the serene lakes and rolling hills of the surrounding region, a visit to Guatapé and Peñol is a must.
After check-in we commence a Medellín city tour with our very own Botero specialist. In just a few hours, this tour introduces us to the most important sights of this amazing city. Explore the historic center and walk through its dynamism and bustle to the famous Plaza Botero, featuring an exhibition of the Colombian artist Fernando Botero whose sculptures have become an emblem of the city.
The MetroCable then takes us up to the Comuna de Santo Domingo, one of the areas most affected by the violence and paramilitarism of the 80s and 90s in Medellín. This MetroCable was built to make the city centre accessible to people living in the outskirts of Medellín, and it promotes unity between inhabitants. While enjoying this spectacular view learn more about the transformation of Medellín, which 20 years ago was one of the most dangerous cities in the world but became a melting pot of cultures with the friendliest and warmest people in the world. Lunch is included at a local restaurant. We are accompanied by a Fernando Botero art specialist. At the conclusion of the tour we return to our hotel. Dinner tonight is at Alambique Restaurant. (All Meals)
Coffee Farm / Art & Graffiti Tour

Guatapé and El Peñol Rock
Get ready for an amazing adventure as you head out of the city and drive for approximately 2 hours to the picturesque resort town of Guatapé. Marvel at the breathtaking landscape of Antioquia as you make your way to this vibrant town. Guatapé is known for its colorful pastel painted buildings and cobblestone streets. It is situated on a man-made reservoir that dates to the 1970s and was created to provide hydroelectricity. Today, the area is home to a series of connected lakes and in the middle of the reservoir is El Peñol rock. This enormous rock, thought to be a meteorite, is a sight to behold. For the adventurous, climb up its 654 steps to the top and enjoy a fantastic view of the surrounding area. Fly to Cartegena / City Tour
Today, we check out of our hotel and transfer to the airport to board a domestic flight to Cartegena. Current plans (subject to change) are to take Avianca flight AV9560 departing at 10:04am and arriving in Medellín at 11:15am. On arrival we are met by a Toto Tours representative and transferred to our hotel for check-in.
Welcome to Cartagena! Exuberant, colorful, tropical, and beautiful – these words perfectly describe Colombia's crowning destination. This vibrant port city overlooks the azure blue waters of the Caribbean from fortress walls once used to protect its inhabitants from marauding pirates and buccaneers. The Port and the Fort are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The walled city is a maze of cobbled streets with colorful colonial houses on all sides, many of which have been converted into stunning intimate boutique hotels set around shady courtyards. Its heady mix of sunshine, tropical surroundings and dazzling painted colonial architecture as well as a vibrant music and dance culture make this Colombia's most precious jewel.
Stroll the town by day and explore the museums, galleries, and emerald factories. For some dramatic panoramas of the city and the coast, head to La Popa church and the Fortress of San Felipe. At night you can take in one of many live music venues or perhaps sip a sundowner at a bar overlooking the ocean. Take a boat trip out to the archipelago of islands known as the Rosarios Islands for superb snorkeling and diving.
After checking in and free time for lunch on our own, we commence a half-day city tour. Our first visit will be to the Castillo de San Felipe. A masterpiece of Spanish colonial military engineering, the fort was built and reinforced during the 16th and 17th centuries to defend the city from pirate attacks. Walk around the fortress to learn about its construction and explore the underground galleries, tunnels, and passageways.
Continue to Cartagena's colonial walled city for a walking tour of the picturesque streets and plazas. Visit the imposing church of San Pedro Claver with its fine collection of stained-glass windows. In front of the church is a square with open-air cafes. Next, visit Bolivar Park, shaded by large trees and featuring four fountains and a statue of Simon Bolivar. At the conclusion of our tour we return to our hotel. Dinner tonight will be at Cande Restaurant a few blocks from our hotel.
(Breakfast / Dinner)
Street Food / Art & Graffiti / Rum & Chocolate
You might want to eat a light breakfast this morning as we are about to experience the flavors of Cartagena's rich cultural heritage on a street food tour. The city is a melting pot of Spanish, African, Arab, and Chinese influences, all of which can be tasted in the local cuisine. Embark on a culinary journey through the winding streets of the old city and discover hidden food havens that are cherished by locals but often overlooked by outsiders. You'll sample a variety of dishes that showcase the unique blend of cultural traditions that make up the city's eclectic gastronomy. Learn about the history of each recipe and how it has evolved over time to create the vibrant and exciting flavors of modern Colombian cuisine. Let yourself be seduced by the aromas and flavors that await you at every turn on this unforgettable street food adventure.
Our “Street Art & Graffiti” tour gives you a deeper insight of Cartagena, with a special focus on the alternative and cultural quarter and the coolest barrio: Getsemaní. The stories are told by present graffiti paintings which include images of tropical scenes, palenqueras and local flora and fauna. In Getsemaní the individuality and spirit of the neighborhood stays intact. You can come as a tourist but you surely leave as a local, understanding what makes the barrio so special with the people engaging themselves a lot to ensure that it preserves its particular charm. This neighborhood has shaken off its bad reputation and started to make use of street art as a way of incorporating the voice of local residents and artists into the fabric and the narrative of the city streets. Graffiti transformed this neighborhood a lot in the last years, especially after the first Graffiti Festival in Getsemaní that took place in December 2013.
Our guide has a complete knowledge of the impressive history of Getsemaní. We start our tour at the clock tower and continue on to the street of La Sierpe (where we can find the first graffitis). After that we head on to Trinidad Plaza, which has an important historical, cultural and national value for Cartagena. We will also walk on the top of the city wall. The tour ends at Puerto Duro with a cultural explanation of the bus stop and the motorbike-taxis in front of the statue India Catalina.
Our day concludes with us indulging in a delightful sensory experience on a “Rum and Chocolate Tasting” tour. Sample a variety of quality aged rums, ranging from a few weeks to up to 27 years, each with its own unique flavor profile. Some rums will be served in shots, while others will be expertly crafted into cocktails. Throughout the tasting, you will savor the perfect pairing of Colombian chocolate and local bites, elevating your taste buds to new heights. This intimate and private experience is full of laughter and stories of pirates, transporting you to a bygone era of Cartagena's history. At its conclusion we return to the hotel for a free evening. (Breakfast)
Rosario Islands Tour
After breakfast we check out and board a private boat, sending our luggage ahead to our final hotel in Barú. Cruising out of the city and journeying through the Bay of Cartagena, passing by the twin forts of San Jose and San Fernando, we head out into the Caribbean Sea. Our sights are set on the Rosario Islands, an archipelago of small coral islands about 25 miles from Cartagena. This stunning area, surrounded by clear waters and some of the best coral reefs in Colombia, is now a National Park.
We spend our day relaxing on pristine, white sandy beaches, taking refreshing dips in the turquoise waters, and snorkeling to discover the astonishing marine life. (Snorkle gear is included.) This unforgettable experience offers the perfect opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and indulge in the natural beauty of the islands. Our sumptuous lunch includes champagne, beer, soft drinks, sandwiches and snacks. After an exciting excursion that lasts approximately 8 hours, we arrive at our beautiful resort hotel for a free evening. (Breakfast / Lunch)
Free Day / Farewell Festivities
Our final day in Colombia is dedicated to indulging in the wonderful amenities and optional activities at our beautiful resort hotel. Pamper yourself at the spa; take a mangrove tour; spot exotic birds during an aviary tour; relax on the beach. The day is yours to fill as you desire.
Tonight we gather on the beach for cocktails to toast the conclusion of our tour and a wish Dan Ware, founder of Toto Tours, a happy retirement. This will be his last tour as owner of the company, so veterans of previous tours over the past 35 years will want to come prepared with favorite stories to share in a roast. It is your chance to get back at him for all those years of “Awards.” Our festivities conclude with a Farwell Dinner on the beach. (Breakfast / Farewell Dinner)
Return to Cartagena / Departure
After breakfast today we transfer together to the Rafael Nunez International Airport in Cartagena to take your international departure flight. Everyone will want to utilize this one included transfer as we are a long ways from the airport and private transfers will be very expensive and payable through the hotel. We will time the group departure to accommodate the earliest departing flights. It takes approximately 1.5 hours driving from the hotel to the airport, and you need three hours pre-departure for check-in. Please do not book any departing flights before 2pm so we don’t have to leave super early. If you are not able to book an afternoon flight out of Cartagena, we can arrange an additional night for you at our Cartagena hotel so you can take a morning flight tomorrow. (Breakfast)

Please keep this in mind when making your travel plans.
WHAT TO BRING
One of the most surprising things about Colombia for foreign visitors is the unchanging nature of its climate all year round. This is because the country is located on the Equator, which means the sun rises and sets at the same time all year round and the season stays the same, unlike almost every other country in the world. There are just the dry seasons (from December to January and July to August) and the rainy seasons (from April to May and October to November). It might get down to the low 50s in Bogotá and the upper 70s in Cartagena and at the beach, but for the most part the temperature will be very mild within this range. All our hotels have laundry service. You will be happier if you pack half of the clothes you think you need, do laundry along the way, and save room in your suitcases for fantastic purchases!
Suggested Packing List:
- Proof of citizenship. Passport and Checkmig document required.
- Lightweight slacks for city sightseeing and evening meals
- Shorts for hiking or excursions on warm days
- Socks and underwear for several days (laundry service readily available at all hotels)
- Sweater and/or windbreaker
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Daypack
- T-shirts / polo shirts / short-sleeved shirts (4 - 5)
- Casual long-sleeved shirts (3 or 4)
- Sunscreen / lip balm / sunglasses / sun hat
- Personal toiletries
- Swimsuit
- No need for any electrical adapters as the electricity supply is basically the same as in the USA. See outlets here.
- A good book for the flights and beach.
MONEY MATTERS
The Colombian currency is the peso (COP). You will find 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 peso coins and 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 peso banknotes. As of January 21, 2025, one US dollar was worth about 4,325 pesos. We’ll be dealing with huge sums here, and it will be a good idea to familiarize yourself in advance with what the notes look like. This website shows the notes and also has a handy converter at the top of the page. Most major credit cards are accepted around the country, including MasterCard, Visa, and American Express. ATMs can be found in all the cities we are visiting. Colombia has a VAT, which will be refunded if you keep your receipts. Please see more details on the page linked above.Tipping Guidelines: Most restaurants automatically add a 10% gratuity to the bill. If it isn’t included please consider tipping 10%. Hotel maids appreciate a tip of $1 to $2 daily. Porters should be given $1 to $2 per bag. Click here to read a helpful article about tipping in Colombia. We will make collective tips to our drivers and guides, and a suggested tip amount will be provided prior to departure.
